Bozzola's inspiration for Relio stems from his love for modularity and openness. He envisioned a professional instrument that could transform into various shapes to cover as many functions as possible. The result is a lamp that can adapt to a range of uses, from painting to school laboratories. The open-source nature of many of its parts allows for customization and expansion, ensuring the lamp's longevity and adaptability.
Relio stands out for its unique properties. The lamp is portable, transformable, and modular, taking on different shapes to accommodate a variety of uses. Its light is engineered to be identical to natural sunlight, providing ideal lighting conditions for professionals wherever they go. The lamp's parts are 3D-printed and open-source, allowing for limitless expansion of its functionality.
The lamp's realization technology is equally impressive. Its modular shell is made entirely of aluminum and premium-grade stainless steel, machined in the hills of Northern Italy. A protective layer of aerospace-grade aluminum oxide protects the metal surfaces from scuff marks and deep scratches. The outer carrying box is made of recycled wood, while the magnetic stand is made of powerful neodymium rare-earth magnets from Japan.
Relio's design process began in 2017 in Brescia, Italy. The final prototypes were ready in 2019, and by early 2020, the lamp was introduced to the market. Despite the use of premium materials and manufacturing entirely in Italy, Bozzola managed to keep the prices low, making the lamp accessible to a wider audience.
The design of Relio was not without its challenges. Bozzola wanted to create a professional device that was both easy to use and easy to repair, while also being aesthetically pleasing. This required a blend of consumer product design rules and professional instrument engineering, resulting in a robust and maintainable product. The successful achievement of this project was keeping the prices low despite the use of premium materials and manufacturing entirely in Italy.
Relio has been recognized for its innovative design and has been awarded the Golden A' Lighting Products and Fixtures Design Award in 2020. This award is granted to marvelous, outstanding, and trendsetting creations that reflect the designer's prodigy and wisdom, embodying extraordinary excellence and significantly impacting the world with their desirable characteristics.
